Knowing how to specify it correctly is what separates a system that performs for 30 years from one that creates expensive problems well before that milestone. Thickness matters enormously and is frequently underspecified. Quality EPDM waterproofing rubber is available from 0.8 mm all the way to 6.0 mm, and intensive green roof systems with deep growing media, heavy vegetation, and significant structural movement loads need a more robust specification than lightweight extensive sedum systems. ISO certification and CE marking are not optional extras for serious projects — they are independent verification that the product meets international quality benchmarks, and they are increasingly written into green building specifications by consultants and sustainability rating bodies who review them before approving procurement. Beyond the product itself, the manufacturer's technical support capability matters just as much. Seam treatment, perimeter detailing, penetration waterproofing around roof drains and mechanical equipment, and compatibility with the drainage and root barrier layers above — all of these require project-specific guidance that a credible manufacturer provides as standard. The waterproofing rubber layer is where the green roof system begins, and getting it right from the specification stage is what determines whether everything above it thrives or eventually fails.
